APPLICATION - Complete the City of Richmond application for employment when openings are posted.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - Candidate will be required to present a valid form of U.S. Government and/or State issued identification and sing a copy of the "Release of Liability" form prior to taking the exam.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST - Candidate must successfully complete the physical agility test, typically conducted directly after the written examination.  The following tasks will be performed:

RUN - The Candidate will complete a one-mile run.  Time is recorded.

BREAK - The Candidate will have a minimum of 10 minutes to rest prior to beginning the agility course.

PHYSICAL AGILITY COURSE - The Candidate will wear a 40-pound weight vest while wearing workout clothes attire.  There is no time limit to successfully complete the evaluation.  The Candidate will not complete the evaluation if unable to complete a station or unable to maintain forward progress for 10 seconds at any point.  Time is recorded.  Components of the course include:

  • LADDER CARRY - The Candidate will remove a 14 foot roof ladder off the truck and place it back on the truck.
  • ATTACK LINE - The Candidate will advance a 100 foot charged 1 3/4 inch attack line a distance of 100 feet without flowing water.
  • SUPPLY LINE - 100 foot 5 inch large diameter hose drag then 100 foot 5 inch large diameter hose pull.
  • HOSE CARRY - The Candidate will move five sections of 2 1/2 inch rolled up hose form one location to another.
  • LADDER RAISE - The Candidate will raise the fly section of a 35 foot ladder in a controlled manner and secure the rung locks at the highest position.  The Candidate will then return the ladder back to the lowered position with the rung locks secured.
  • EQUIPMENT CARRY - The Candidate will carry two pieces of equipment from one location to the next maneuvering around cones.
  • HAMMER SLED - The Candidate will move the 158 pound I-beam from one marked end to the other marked end using a provided sledgehammer.
  • DUMMY DRAG - The Candidate will drag a 185 pound dummy on a Sked 60 feet in an oval pattern.

ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW - Candidate will be interviewed by RFD personnel representing all ranks.  Top Candidates will be recommended for a Chief interview.  Typically conducted the week after the written examination and physical agility course.

CHIEF INTERVIEW - Top Candidates will be interviewed by the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief.

CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER - Conditional job offers will be made to the top Candidate(s) depending on the number of current openings.  Offer is contingent upon passing drug screening, a comprehensive background investigation, and medical examination.

START DATE DETERMINED - An employment start date will be determined as the Candidate(s) move through the last requirements post conditional job offer.
