City of Richmond Updating Building & Fire Codes
Proposed ordinance changes to the City’s adopted Building codes & Fire Code has been discussed at recent commission meetings since the City will be adopting 2015 changes to the ordinances later this year.
The main purpose of the various Building codes & Fire code is to protect the public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to new construction, remodels and occupancy of buildings. The City adopts new codes every 3- 4 yrs to keep updated in any significant changes in all areas of code regulation. Once the City Commission adopts changes to the building codes and fire code, a fee schedule is evaluated, presented and adopted by the Commission. At this time the adopted codes become law. The last code adoption occurred in September 2015 with the 2012 ICC codes which the majority of area municipalities are following.
The City of Richmond lists 10 types of International codes and various amendments in the Code of Ordinances. These are Building Code, Plumbing Code, Mechanical Code, Energy Conservation Code, National Electrical Code, Swimming Pool and Spa Code, Fuel Gas Code, Existing Building Code, Residential Code, and Property Maintenance Code.
Evaluation of 2015 ICC Codes will continue with goal to adopt these changes by the beginning of calendar year 2020.
